Overview and Use

MINLOX 2.5 (Minoxidil 2.5mg Tablet) is an oral vasodilator used in the management of severe or refractory hypertension — high blood pressure that has not responded adequately to other antihypertensive medicines. Minoxidil works by directly relaxing the smooth muscle of arterial walls, causing blood vessels to widen and thereby reducing resistance against which the heart must pump.

Oral Minoxidil is typically reserved for patients with difficult-to-control hypertension and is almost always prescribed alongside a diuretic and a beta-blocker to counteract the fluid retention and reflex tachycardia it may cause.

How to Take MINLOX 2.5

• Dosage: Your physician will determine the appropriate starting dose based on your blood pressure readings. Doses are titrated gradually under supervision.
• Timing: May be taken with or without food. Take at the same time each day for consistent blood pressure control.
• Combination Therapy: Always take alongside prescribed diuretic and beta-blocker unless specifically instructed otherwise.
• Do not stop abruptly: Sudden discontinuation can cause a rapid rebound rise in blood pressure. Always consult your doctor before making any changes.

Mechanism of Action

Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener that causes hyperpolarisation of vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to arterial vasodilation. This reduces peripheral vascular resistance and lowers systemic blood pressure. The compensatory responses it triggers — fluid retention and increased heart rate — necessitate concomitant diuretic and beta-blocker therapy in virtually all patients.

Side Effects

• Fluid retention and oedema — ankle swelling, weight gain (managed with diuretic co-prescription)
• Reflex tachycardia — increased heart rate (managed with beta-blocker co-prescription)
• Hypertrichosis — increased hair growth on body and face with prolonged use
• Hypotension — excessive blood pressure lowering, especially on initiation
• Pericardial effusion — rare but serious; fluid around the heart requiring immediate medical attention

Precautions & Warnings

• Heart Disease: Use with extreme caution in patients with coronary artery disease, recent myocardial infarction, or heart failure.
• Kidney Disease: Dose adjustment and close monitoring required in patients with impaired kidney function.
• Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Oral Minoxidil is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor immediately.
• Pheochromocytoma: Do not use in patients with pheochromocytoma, as vasodilators may stimulate catecholamine release.
• Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor of all other medicines, particularly other antihypertensives and guanethidine.
• Regular Monitoring: Blood pressure, body weight, and kidney function should be monitored regularly during therapy.
